Tracking Checklist: 10 Questions to Ask your Tracking Specialist

What exactly does marketing tracking entail?

Marketing tracking is the process of collecting data about how people interact with your marketing — like ads, emails, websites — so you can see what’s working and what’s not.

What kinds of things can I track?

Clicks on ads, visits to your website, purchases, email opens, button clicks, form submissions, phone calls, and even how long someone stays on a page. We identify the most important events/key metrics for your business, and setup custom conversion tracking.

What tools do you use for tracking?

Common tools include Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, LinkedIn Insight Tag, Google Tag Manager etc. Once we figure out which platforms and channels you need to track, we will know what tools to use.

What is a pixel or a tag?

A "pixel" or "tag" is a tiny bit of code placed on your website or in your emails. It sends back information when someone interacts with your content. If the customer has accepted cookies, we will know how this customer interacted with your marketing.

How do you know which ad led to a sale?

Attribution models try to connect the dots — for example, giving credit to the first click, the last click, or a combination of all touchpoints. A customer may have seen your social media ad and liked it. Then later googled and bought your product via your website. With tracking we will be able to see that this customer was influenced by the social media ad.

Is tracking legal?

Yes — if it’s done correctly. Businesses must follow privacy laws like GDPR in Europe. It extremely important to use cookie banners, anonymize data where necessary, and ensure all tracking tools are configured according to legal standards.

Do I have to be worried about GDPR?

Does your website include a GDPR Cookie banner and a privacy policy including a section clearly explaining your use of Google Ads, how data is collected, used, and shared with third parties like Google?

Double-check your cookie banner to make sure you comply with EU laws before our Google Ads Managers start running your campaigns.

What if I’m running ads on multiple platforms — can tracking tell me which one is working best?

Yes — that’s actually one of the main benefits. You can compare performance across Facebook, Google, email, etc.

We might learn that Instagram ads are driving more sales than Google Ads —this way we can shift your budget accordingly and increase revenue, so you get more for less.

Can you track my competitors too?

We can’t see their exact data, but we can use tools to estimate their traffic, ad strategy, and SEO performance.
